John Lane Presents His First Novel

Acclaimed poet and naturalist, John Lane will return to City Lights Bookstore on Friday, June 12th at 6:30 p.m. to present his first novel. Fate Moreland’s Widow is about a mill bookkeeper who struggles with the morally ambiguous world of mill fortunes and foothills justice in the aftermath of a long-forgotten tragedy. Ron Rash says of the book, “John Lane has long been recognized as one of the South’s finest poets and memoirists. His poet's eye for detail seamlessly merges with a born storyteller's gift for narrative. Fate Moreland's Widow gives voice to those who endured one of the most painful and neglected chapters in American history."  John Lane is the author of over a dozen books of poetry and prose, including Abandoned Quarry which won the SIBA (Southeastern Independent Booksellers Alliance) Poetry Book of the Year prize. He teaches environmental studies at Wofford College and lives in Spartanburg, SC.

Edward Fahey Returns with a New Novel

Sapphire author, Edward Fahey will present his third novel on Friday, May 22nd at 6:30 p.m.  The Gardens of Ailana explores the metaphysical, the idea that there are places on this planet not confined to the logic of men or limitations of science. In this modern-day fictional tale, four people with very different backgrounds, each scarred by a horrific childhood, meet at a place of healing where one's most crippling darkness must be faced down. In the rubble of their lives and broken spirits they learn that in their weaknesses lie their most profound strengths. In their festering wounds they find hope. In The Gardens of Ailana we see through the souls of mystics, experience laying-on-of-hands from the healer's point of view. Feel at home among wonders and magic. Fahey says of The Gardens of Ailana, “This is the book others have been laying the groundwork for and building towards.” Novelist and teacher, Fahey spent his life hunting magic, seeking out the other sides of reality. His previous novels are Mourning After and Entertaining Naked People. To reserve any of his books please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.

Steven Harvey Discussion & Signing

There is a reason why we can’t let go of haunting memories and they can’t let go of us. Memories, especially bad ones, can be clues to who we really are. They can help us sharpen our understanding of the meaning and purposes of our lives. Steven Harvey, author of The Book of Knowledge and Wonder, will lead a discussion on why monstrous memories are, in fact, our friends on Saturday, April 18th at 3 p.m. at City Lights Bookstore. The Book of Knowledge and Wonder is a memoir about claiming a legacy of wonder from knowledge of a devastating event. In some ways it has the feel of a detective story in which Harvey pieces together the life of his mother who committed suicide when he was eleven, out of the 406 letters she left behind. As son and mother collaborate in the creation of their story, it has the perennial theme of abiding love, despite the odds that fuel the tale. He is a professor Emeritus of English at Young Harris College, Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Ashland MFA, Senior Editor of River Teeth Magazine, the creator of The Humble Essayist  website, and the author of three collections of personal essays. Following the reading, Harvey will be signing and copies of his book will be available for purchase. To reserve copies of The Book of Knowledge and Wonder please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.

The book is a conversation between Everett, an American ethicist, and John DeGruchy, a South African theologian, reflecting on their work with wood and how it has helped them find creativity and meaning in experiences of both loss and transformation. Through their friendship, correspondence, and work together they have developed a rich narrative about the way this craftwork has shaped their relationships with family, friends and the natural environment.  Everett taught Christian ethics in graduate schools for over thirty years before turning to woodworking.
