Dan Pierce to Discuss the Wild History of NASCAR

07/16/2010 7:00 pm
07/16/2010 8:30 pm

Dan Pierce of Asheville will offer a program on the early history of NASCAR, based on his new book, Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France, on Friday, July 16th at 7:00 p.m.

Pierce has been a racing fan for years. Although he grew up within earshot of the Asheville Spedway, he didn't go to a race until his former roommate at WCU convinced him to go to the Winston Cup race at the Bristol Motor Speedway in 1994. After years of resisting, he was completely hooked.

Drawing on the memories of early stars including Humpy Wheeler, Junor Johnson, and Big Bill France, Pierce shows that the early history of the sport was indeed wild, featuring many drivers who were racers-by-day and bootleggers-by-night and who drew huge crowds to tracks from the 1930s to the early 1970s. Pierce devotes chapters to pre-war Piedmont stock car racing, Big Bill France and the Atlanta Bootleggers, the birth of NASCAR, and what he calls "The End of the Beginning, 1968-1972," among other topics.

Pierce will discuss the book and take questions from the audience. An autographing will follow his remarks.
