City Lights Bookstore is in Sylva, North Carolina, a small Main Street town tucked in the heart of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Our goal is to share the literature of the region with the world, and the world of books with our community.
Visit City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, December 1st at 5 p.m. for an evening of poetry followed by a reception. This reading is part of a series of readings celebrating the 80th anniversary of the North Carolina Poetry Society. Former North Carolina Poet Laureate Kathryn Byer of Cullowhee will help host the event and share some poems from her forthcoming book, Descent. The other featured poets will be Joseph Mills, Kathryn Kirkpatrick, and Julie Suk. Eric and Norma Hendrix will provide music after the reading.
Joseph Mills is a faculty member of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has written four collections of poetry including Sending Christmas Cards to Huck and Hamlet. He also co-authored A Guide to North Carolina Wineries.
Kathryn Kirkpatrick is a writer and literary scholar and has written five collections of poetry including Unaccountable Weather. She is also the editor of a collection of essays on Irish women writers titled, Border Crossings: Irish Women Writers and National Identities. She lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains and teaches at Appalachian State University.
Julie Suk is an award-winning poet with four collections including The Dark Takes Aim. She has also co-edited Bear Crossings: An Anthology of North American Poets. She lives in Charlotte, NC.
