Emily Herring Wilson, author of Becoming Elizabeth Lawrence: Discovered Letters of a Southern Gardener, will be at the store on Friday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. a reading and booksigning.
In 1927 Elizabeth Lawrence was a recent graduate of Barnard College who would go on to become the first female graduate in the landscape design program at North Carolina State University. Elizabeth and her Raleigh neighbor, playwright Anne Preston Bridgers, struck up a friendship. Through their correspondence one glimpses what life in a Southern town was like for upper class women during the 1930s and 40s. The women discuss books, plays, travels, ideas, and of course, the garden.
